Since I model HO, most of the wood I use is never longer than 11" or 12". Making the tubes any longer would make it difficult or impossible to get the pieces out. I could get 7 12" tubes out of each 8' section of tube protector (because of the end caps). With some pieces of molding and foam core, I got this thing built for around $20.

I cut the tubes on a little scroll saw, however a thin blade hack saw blade and miter box would also work. I de-burred the edges and trued up the ends on my belt sander, then attached each row of 5 tubes to 2 pieces of 1/8"x1" trim pieces (nothing special about the trim dimensions--it was what was cheapest at the store). Come to think of it, I probably could've swiped a bunch of those wooden paint stirs. I made 5 rows like this, stacked them up and trimmed the outside frame, cut a square back from the foam core and hot glued it all together. Here's how it turned out:

Substitute for Isopropyl Alcohol http://www.sierrawestscalemodels.com/vanforum/discussion/208/substitute-for-isopropyl-alcohol Tue, 26 Jun 2012 00:15:43 -0600 John_in_australia 208@/vanforum/discussions
I have been using Methylated spirits and seems to work OK. Also is "rubbing alcohol" the same as Isopropyl alcohol ?? as that is what it is sold as in Australia.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Pastel Chalks http://www.sierrawestscalemodels.com/vanforum/discussion/191/pastel-chalks Tue, 13 Mar 2012 08:59:50 -0600 pratoa 191@/vanforum/discussions Tools. http://www.sierrawestscalemodels.com/vanforum/discussion/186/tools. Sat, 25 Feb 2012 18:49:05 -0700 John_in_australia 186@/vanforum/discussions So far I have made a few basic structures and even had a go at scratch building one structure. I still haven't got my painting/weathering technique right yet, but I keep reading and keep on trying.

I would like to order any tools that I don't have to arrive at about the same time as the kits.
A list of tools would very helpful.

Thanks.]]>
How about those chalk sticks? http://www.sierrawestscalemodels.com/vanforum/discussion/26/how-about-those-chalk-stickss Mon, 09 May 2011 06:26:50 -0600 admin 26@/vanforum/discussions Here is some general information about my favorite brand... Rembrandt:

The numeration/color system is as follow:
The raw color is numbered XXX.3 - the 3 indicates a raw color and the XXX indicates the color
If the number after the dot in higher than 3 it is a shade - that is it has has black added and the higher the number, the darker the shade. If the number after the dot is smaller than 3 it is a tint - that is is has white added.

The Rembrandt chalk sticks do not contain clay binders and fillers - that's why they work so much better than weathering powders. A list of basic colors follows below...]]>
