Millsite Tour

1 - the Old Mill

The original old mill: with its faded and dingy white siding provides an excellent contrast to the new open mill. The patch work mixing of plain and faded white siding creates a story all by itself. This mill is still operational providing two entry points for logs at the mill complex.

2 - the New Mill

The “new” mill is open on all four sides for viewing the sawmill machinery. Included is the log deck, carriage, double saw husk, live rolls, cutoff saw, and dead rolls. Overhead belts drive the machinery and details. The second floor contains the saw filers room.

3 - the Log Haul

The log haul connects to the deck via a mechanism than drives the log haul chain. The gears of the drive are visible in the extreme right of the picture where the logs enter the mill.

4 - the Front Dock and Flat Car Table

The logs that eventually sink in the pond are raised to the surface by the log pond boat then “poled” to the flat car table. Here they are chained in place and brought to dock level.

5 - the Dry Rollway

Logs are stored here until needed in the mill. The heavy timbers and bracing can support some serious big sticks!

6, 7, 8 - the Log Pond Details

The narrow dock, boat house, dynamite shack, and log pond boat shed comprise the log pond details.

9 - the Log Pond

What good is a pond that is not well stocked with logs? The mill depends on a steady flow of timber to cut and the pond keeps the logs fresh and ready. The small boat is in this shot working on bringing a sinker up from the bottom.

10, 11 - the Unloader and Brow

The unloading platform, donkey engine, tool shed, and log brow.

13 - the Transfer Table

Cut lumber is graded and sorted on the series of tracks making up the transfer table. The platform on wheels in the lower right travels back and forth along the wooden rails moving small log buggies to the different tracks.

14 - the Rough Drying Shed

The freshly cut lumber is stacked and dried here before being sorted and sent by rail to its final destination.

15 - the Sawdust Shed

Sawdust is stored and kept dry until it is conveyed to the burn area and disposed of either by hauling away for fuel around the camp or simply burned in place.

16 - the burn Wall/Area

Sawdust and scrap wood is burned on the “other” side of this cement wall.

17 - the Elevated Slab Bin

The elevated slab bin stores slab until the boilers need it for fuel. A simple coal gate type of chute is used to remove the desired slab. Loggers kept it simple!

18 - the Boilerhouse

The boiler house and tall stacks are a great scene. Inside is a large brick stationary boiler and mill engine.
